Been to The Taylor Farmers’ Market?

31 Aug

I made my way out to Taylor Farmers’ Market this past weekend and came home with some unique finds—San Marzano tomatoes, pickled watermelon rinds and more.

If you haven’t found the time to get out there on a Saturday morning yet, you’re quickly running out of time. The Market only runs through October, so if you enjoy locally grown produce, homemade baked goods, handcrafted art and free music, don’t miss the chance to find it all in one place, especially now that the weather is cooling off.

The Taylor Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday through October from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Shaved Ice and Hot Dog Weather

12 Aug

The temperatures couldn’t be more ideal for a place such as Chilly Chilly Bang Bang, the little green truck you’ve more than likely passed on the corner of Jackson Avenue and the Loop. The parking lot has been filling up lately as Oxonians search for relief from the sweltering heat. More than 20 flavors—sugar-free too—of “New Orleans-style” shaved ice are available along with hot dogs (chili and cheese optional).

Hours are 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sundays.

For more information, check out the Chilly Chilly Bang Bang Facebook page.

UPDATE 9/16: Chilly Chilly Bang Bang has relocated to highway 30 between Oxford Elementary School and North Lamar (near the entrance to Hwy 7).

New Yum at Honey Bee Bakery

21 Jul

OK, I’m going to start by saying that I have never been a fan of pimento cheese. However, when I caught a glimpse of the new pimento cheese sandwich at Honey Bee Bakery on Jackson Avenue (near Belk’s) I knew there was something different about it. Chef Sean Adams later divulged that he blends it for less time to give it a chunkier consistency and then adds roasted jalepenos to the mix! The taste is very different than any other pimento cheese I’ve tried.

Needless to say, the pimento cheese sandwich isn’t the only new menu item that’s shown up lately at Honey Bee. There are new lunch combos and trios; a roasted veggie sandwich; daily specials such as pork tacos and pizza; and two daily soups that constantly rotate (I recommend the coconut curry lentil). Oh, and let’s not forget about the homemade breads and sweets.

The new menu isn’t live at the website yet, so you’ll need to stop in to check it out. Sign up for the daily specials email while on the site or in the restaurant to receive email updates about what’s on the menu for the day.

Taste Winning Pies Saturday, July 17

16 Jul

Photo: Taste of Home

I’m not a morning person. But, when I heard that the annual pie contest is being held tomorrow at the Mid-Town Farmer’s Market on Lamar, with the winners being announced at 9:00 a.m., well, I may have to grab a fork and bid a fond farewell to my pillow.

Judging begins at 8:00 a.m., and the pies will be ready to divvy up an hour after—for only a $1 per slice! Make sure you get there early because there’s only so much pie to go around.

While I’m on the subject, have you seen the website for the Midtown Farmer’s Market? Bookmark it and check back often to monitor which vendors are scheduled to sell each week.

No More Chocolate Bar

9 May

If you love chocolate, you probably noticed the recent closing of The Chocolate Bar on the Square. Seems the owners had a baby a couple of weeks before Double Decker and decided to close the shop to spend more time with family and the new addition.

I’ll miss the Oreos covered in peanut butter and milk chocolate. Maybe another sweet shop nearby will consider making them (hint, hint)?

Celebrating Grads and Moms

7 May

This weekend in Oxford is all about Ole Miss graduates getting their degrees and moms celebrating Mother’s Day.

For the occasion, I thought I’d share a link to 10 Years of Chocolate Cakes from Bon Appetit magazine. You never know when you’ll want to whip up a chocolate cake for that special person in your life!

Have a napkin at the ready for your drool and click here to see the recipes.

Milkshakes Help Build Park

1 May

From now through May 20, every time you purchase a large milkshake from Chik-fil-A on West Jackson, 50 cents will go toward renovations at Rivers Hill Park in Oxford.

Donation jars will also be located inside the restaurant for those who would like to donate to the park’s rebuild without purchasing a shake.

For more information on the Oxford Park Commission, click here.
