Guinness Recipe and Reminder

Have you pledged to help Oxford’s Pantry while helping Guinness set a Guinness World Record this St. Patrick’s Day? It’s easy and free!

For every person who pledges to join the Guinness party on St. Patrick’s Day (and enters the code OXFO), EatingOxford.com will be able to make a donation to The Pantry, Oxford’s local food bank.

Help make history–while helping our local Pantry. Simply visit Guinness.com and click Count Me In after validating your age to join the party. Then just enter your first name–and the most important part–the optional code OXFO. This will ensure that your pledge counts toward Oxford!

Guinness Chocolate Brownies
(pictured above)

Ingredients:
100 ml Guinness
185 g dark chocolate
50 g milk chocolate
185 g butter
3 eggs
275 g caster sugar
vanilla essence
85 g plain flour
20 g cocoa powder
50 g white chocolate buttons

Directions:
Line a baking tray with parchment paper and sprinkle white chocolate buttons in tray. Melt the Guinness, butter, dark and milk chocolate together, remove from heat when melted. Whip eggs sugar and vanilla essence (until figure of 8) and fold into the chocolate mix. Sieve in flour and coco powder, folding in three stages. Pour into tray and spread out. Bake for 20 – 22 minutes at 320 degrees F. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Andrew Zimmern Visits Mama Jo’s

This past Saturday (and again on Wednesday since his tastebuds were calling him back for more), Andrew Zimmern, host of the popular Travel Channel Show “Bizarre Foods America,” visited Mama Jo’s at 1503 N. Lamar Blvd. to film the restaurant’s offerings for a new show Zimmern is working on that pays tribute to regional foods.

Oxonian John T. Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, joined Zimmern at Mama Jo’s and both enjoyed a buffet of home-cooked Southern food, including fried corn bread, smothered pork chops, neck bones, Rotel chicken, catfish, turnip greens, boiled okra and veggies.

Oxford’s Firehouse Subs Celebrates One Year

Firehouse Subs in Oxford will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Wednesday, March 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Everyone is invited to visit the store on Jackson Avenue to help celebrate the occassion. Special Firehouse Subs gear will be given out to the first 100 customers.

New Menus at Lusa Pastry Cafe

Lusa Pastry Cafe has introduced updated menus for breakfast and lunch, which include new sandwiches and a daily soup menu.

The newly expanded restaurant and Portuguese bakery is open Tuesday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Bangkok Thai Closes

A little more than a month ago, the Bangkok Thai restaurant located at Oxford’s Days Inn hung up its pans and closed its doors. Information about its closure wasn’t readily available, and there’s been no word of a restaurant moving into its location.

Free Lunch and Computer Help Tuesday, February 28

On Tuesday, February 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce at 299 Jackson Avenue West, the L.O.U. Entrepreneurial Alliance will present an educational workshop: TECHknowledge by CambinoTech

Admission is free and lunch is provided by My Michelle’s/Nations Best.

TECHknowledge is an open forum discussion for anyone with questions about computers or technology. Bring your questions regarding computers, software, printers, smartphones, and anything related to electronics. The event will be hosted by Cameron Wilson, a certified computer technician with CambinoTech, who will answer any and all questions regarding information technology, whether the topic is Microsoft or Apple-related. Questions are FREE.

Campus-Based Lenoir Dining Reopens

Following a six-month renovation of its kitchen and dining room, Lenoir Dining has reopened. Housed inside Lenoir Hall on Sorority Row, Lenoir Dining is an educational operation within the Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management at Ole Miss. The student-run restaurant seats 40 and offers students hands-on experience in all aspects of restaurant operations.

The menu at Lenoir changes weekly, with each meal consisting of a drink, freshly made bread of the day, soup or salad, entree and dessert. The restaurant is open Tuesdays for lunch and dinner and Thursdays for lunch. The cost is $7 for students, faculty and staff; $10 for all others.

Free Pancakes!

IHOP has raised nearly $8 million to support charities in the communities in which it operates since starting its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006. On Tuesday, February 28, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., guests from around the country are invited to celebrate National Pancake Day with a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes at IHOP. In return for the free pancakes, guests are asked to consider leaving a donation a local Children’s charity—Oxford’s charity is Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center.

Taylor’s Pub Purchases Hot Dog Cart

For those who enjoy a late-night hot dog or two, Taylor’s Pub owner Jason Plunk has acquired Oxford’s popular hot dog cart, with plans to continue providing hot dogs–with chili or cheese–for a long time to come. Plunk says that the cart is also available for all types of parties, for kids both young and old.

In addition, the new location of Taylor’s Pub, behind The Lyric, has been open since the end of January.
