New Hunan Closes

20 Jun

Sources tell me that a For Lease sign has gone up at New Hunan on Jackson Avenue, signaling that the restaurant has served its last buffet. No word on whether it was competition from Chow Tyme that drove them out of business or if the restaurant closed for other reasons.

UPDATE 11/13/11: New Hunan has reopened. See post here.

Cursed Location?

9 Jun

While I don’t agree with the idea of a location being cursed, Fat Albert’s (formerly co-located with Little Dooey’s) is now closed. An EatingOxford.com reader stopped by the other day to try the new pizza the restaurant had added to its menu, and the doors were locked and all the furniture had been moved out.

Anyone out there brave enough to be the next one to move in?

The Deli News Closes After More Than a Decade

26 May

I almost couldn’t believe it when I heard that The Deli News was closing. After more than 10 years in business, the Oxford institution is shutting its doors.

Word around town is that you have one more day to grab Sonny’s sandwiches before they’re gone forever.

(Find a previous posting about The Deli News here.)

When the Blogger’s Away…

25 May

It seems like every time I leave town so much restaurant news happens! I’ve been in Chicago since last Friday and since I’ve been gone I’ve heard from EatingOxford.com readers that IHOP is now open, Fat Cat’s closed and Waltz on the Square shut its doors.

Details to come when I’m back at the home computer…

Tallulah’s Kitchen Closing

9 May

After a year and a half in business, owner Laurie Stirratt has decided to close Tallulah’s Kitchen.

From Tallulah’s Facebook page earlier today: “I have decided to close down Tallulah’s Kitchen. This has been a hard decision for me to make. There are a multitude of reasons for my decision, which I won’t bore you with. I want to thank you all for your patronage and support. My staff and I have loved serving you and we will miss seeing you all up here at Tallulah’s Kitchen. We will be open our regular hours this week or until we run out of food! So come on up if you can.”

I know I speak for a lot of Oxonians when I say, we’ll miss you Tallulah’s!

Little Dooey Closed for Repair

29 Mar

A large sign in the window of Little Dooey’s states “Closed for Repair,” but other restaurant signage has been taken down. Not sure when–or if–the restaurant will reopen. Anyone out there heard anything?

Fat Cat’s is Relocating

11 Mar

If you went by Fat Cat’s Catfish & Steaks on College Hill Road and found the restaurant closed, it’s because they’ve been moving. Where to? The former location of Red House Burgers & Blues at 203 S. 11th Street near the Square.

I ran into Fat Cat’s manager Justin Harris today as he was helping to move the final load of equipment into the new space. Harris says that the new location will hopefully be open by the end of next week and will unveil up to 20 new menu items (minus the plate lunches offered at the College Hill Rd. location). There are plans to feature a variety of catfish dishes not available elsewhere in Oxford, and the owners are considering extending the restaurant’s hours to be open seven days a week.

More details to come.

UPDATE 3/31/11: Fat Cat’s is scheduled to open tomorrow night.

UPDATE 6/9/11: Fat Cat’s is now closed and a new grill and bar is being constructed in its place.

Downtown Grill to Close in April

8 Feb

Rumors have been floating around for a couple of weeks now about Downtown Grill closing its doors. After more than 20 years on the Square, Downtown Grill will serve its final meal this April. Restaurant owner Patty Lewis told The Oxford Eagle that after 22 years, it was just time to move on.

Taking over the location in August will be Boure, whose owner, John Currence has been seeking a new spot for the restaurant for the past three years.

UPDATE 3/31/11: Downtown Grill is now closed.

Kitchen Closed at Petit Milletts

13 Jan

After a much too short four months, we bid adieu to French-inspired Petit Milletts. The restaurant closed for the holidays and never reopened.

Sources say that a former employee is looking into transferring the restaurant into his name and reopening, but no time has been set for the transaction, if possible, to occur.

The Presbyterian Church owns and holds leasing rights to the building.

Red House Turns Out the Lights

9 Jan

Red House Burgers & Blues officially closed its doors Friday night.

After a year and a half in business, the restaurant, which served burgers, catfish and plate lunches and hosted local music acts on the weekends ran out of steam.

Word has it that an interested party may want to purchase the restaurant as is and reopen it, but nothing has been confirmed.
