Petit Millets Opens at End of August

14 Jul

After nearly a year of sitting empty, the space that once housed Blue Pan Grille at 302 South 11th Street (behind the Lyric) is getting a new inhabitant—petit Milletts. Curiosity was piqued recently when flyers were posted in the windows of the restaurant; passersby began inquiring about the type of food that would be served and the meaning behind the restaurant’s name.

The brainchild of former University Club executive chef and 13-year culinary veteran Wesley Turnage, petit Milletts will offer French bistro cuisine with a southern twist when it opens its doors the last week of August. Menu items will include fare such as Aubergines Croquant (crispy eggplant topped with roasted tomato, goat cheese, hollandaise sauce and fresh herbs); Rillettes Fume de Saumon (smoked salmon rillettes with toasted baguette, red onion jam and creole mustard); Quiche Lorraine (traditional custard filled with bacon and Gruyere cheese, served with tomato carpaccio and balsamic salad); Boeuf Bourguignon (tender beef short ribs slowly braised in red wine with mirepoix and placed on a grits risotto); and Glacer Profiteroles de Creme (house-made profiteroles stuffed with vanilla ice cream and topped with warm chocolate sauce).

Wes is particularly proud of the restaurant’s exhibition-style kitchen—the only one in Oxford, which will allow diners a view into the bustling kitchen, where all of the action will happen. Separate menus will be offered for lunch and dinner, specials will be a regular occurrence, and a daily vegetarian option will always be available. The expansive bar menu will also offer several specialty drinks exclusive to petit Milletts.

For those who are trying to stick to a budget, you won’t break the bank at petit Milletts. While Wes wanted to give Oxonians something different and unique, he also understood that he needed to make it affordable. Through careful planning, he succeeded in pricing everything on the menu under $21, with many dishes hovering in the $10 range. “My goal is to offer refined service with low prices,” he says.

Oh, and the meaning behind the restaurant’s name? Stop in and ask Wes; I guarantee it’s not what you think.

Planned hours of operation for petit Milletts are:

  • Tuesday – Friday 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (lunch), 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (dinner)
  • Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (brunch), 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (dinner)
  • Sunday – Monday (closed)

Varsity Grille Patio Expanding

5 May

The Courthouse Square Preservation Commission recently approved a 40-foot extension of Varsity Grille’s outdoor patio plus an additional door for access into the building at 308 South Lamar. The approval means removal of four parking spots reserved for Varsity Grille diners, and while this may translate into parking a little further away, a bigger patio will be a welcome respite during the approaching summertime months.

If you haven’t tried out the patio yet, this Thursday during Varsity Girls Nite Out may be your chance. From 4 p.m. til close, girls enjoy 1/2 price appetizers, 2 for 1 drink specials, live music and giveaways.

Grand Opening of Revamped Castle Hill

15 Apr

Tomorrow night a live blues band and courtyard dining will help guests celebrate the grand opening of Castle Hill Resort & Club. The eye-catching mountaintop resort was recently purchased by Dr. Gary Roberson of Jackson, Mississippi.

Chef Hal Rusk says he’ll be bringing Southern fare with a fine-dining twist to customers of Castle Hill’s Randolph restaurant with the introduction of dishes such as striped bass with catfish cream sauce and veal with quail eggs. The full menu will be available online soon.

The restaurant and lounge will continue to be open to the public, although a new, private, social club membership is also available, which will guarantee preferred reservations and seating.

Restaurant hours will be Wednesday through Saturday (starting at 6 p.m.) and a Southern-style Sunday lunch buffet will be served 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with dinner 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Crawfish Season In Full Swing

  • Wednesdays – Irie at 4 p.m. and Proud Larry’s at 5 p.m.
  • Thursdays – Boure at 4 p.m. and Taylor’s Pub

Blind Pig Reopens

26 Mar

If you’ve been waiting and peeking in windows for the last several weeks, the doors are finally opening tonight on the basement of The Thompson Building to welcome back patrons of The Blind Pig. A grand opening celebration is currently planned for Tuesday, March 30.

The standard Blind Pig menu of po-boys, paninis, soups and chips for lunch and dinner will kick in immediately, and a new breakfast menu will make its debut in mid April with items such as breakfast burritos served from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

UPDATE 04/01/10: OK, it appears Blind Pig didn’t meet its original opening date. Sorry to jump the gun there, but it’s looking like April 9 is the official grand opening date now.

UPDATE 04/05/10: The Pig has been serving lunch since last Thursday; no liquor license until next week.

Two-for-One Lunch at Parrish’s Every Monday

14 Mar

Monday is notorious for being the worst day of the week. It doesn’t have to be when you have the option of bringing a friend to Parrish’s on Jackson Avenue and partaking in the two-for-one lunch special. Everything on the menu, from the taco salad to the shrimp and bacon wrap are two for the price of one from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Do you owe someone lunch? Maybe you want to say “Thank You”, “Happy Birthday”, or “You’re the Best.” I can’t think of a better day to sneak someone away from work than on a Monday–and without the guilt of spending a day’s earnings. So, who are you going to take to lunch today?

Ghost Soldier Reappears

19 Feb

With renovations apparently put on hold for the time being, The Ghost Soldier has reopened this week, with plans to start serving a full menu by the middle of next week.

I’m thoroughly confused…

UPDATE 3/4/10: Have you noticed that the sign came down on the exterior of The Ghost Soldier? Is there a name change in the works?

UPDATE 3/12/10: Just heard owners may change the Ghost Soldier theme from sports to Irish…

UPDATE 4/06/10: There is now a “For Rent” sign on the Ghost Soldier. Any takers?

UPDATE 6/11/10: Construction is underway inside the old Ghost Soldier. Word is that there’s a new bar and restaurant on its way.

Oxford in the New York Times

9 Feb

Oxford, New Albany and William Faulkner all made it into the New York Times this weekend by way of the New Albany Journal. The topic? Beer.

It’s actually quite an interesting read, especially the part about how Faulkner lobbied for beer in Oxford back in the summer of 1950.

Check it out here.

No More “3 for $20″

21 Jan

In a surprising move by Chili’s Grill & Bar, the chain plans to stop its “3 for $20″ promotion in the next few days and introduce a new, shortened menu (eight pages down from 12), with 75% of the items containing a new recipe or ingredient–some have been replaced altogether. According to Chili’s president Wyman Roberts, the new menu will consist of “improved burgers and ribs,” tacos, salads, sandwiches and soups.
