It’s always so exciting to hear about someone in the community that has decided to step up and help change things for the better.
In the midst of all of the commotion surrounding Sunday liquor sales, Phil Rogers, manager and group leader at Baptist Healthplex, has instead been pondering the food in Oxford, and how he and his group of supporters can help steer diners toward healthier options when dining out.
The group plans to work hand-in-hand with independent area restaurants by requesting that each one submit its top three healthiest meals along with their ingredients. The information will then be passed along to registered dietitians who will determine if the meals are healthy enough to receiveĀ “Healthy Oxford” classification and a sticker, which can then be placed next to the item on the restaurant’s menu.
Rogers says he also hopes to have a website up soon, www.healthyoxfordms.com, which will showcase opportunities to participate in healthy, active events around Oxford.
I’d personally like to thank Rogers for leading this campaign. With Mississippi being ranked as the fattest state in the nation, a little guidance could go a long way in helping people reach their health goals.

A great start would be to make sure every restaurant offers a vegan entree. Plant based cuisine has no cholesterol and is often lower in saturated fat and calories.

As a Registered Dietitian, I am always looking for a healthy option. At Mink’s we are now offering Smoothies….no added sugar….whole fruit which includes the pulp, skin, and seeds. They are amazing and offer three serving of fruit per Smoothie. I would like to hear about what other folks are doing to keep Oxford fit, looking forward to checking out the web page.
