In my meanderings, I recently came across a website for a restaurant in Boston (Cambridge) called Tupelo.
It’s a fairly new venture (opened in mid 2009), with a head chef who gets his inspiration from his family’s roots in New Orleans and a certain rock-n-roller you may know. The menu was designed to reflect Southern/Creole fare (a pretty popular menu goal in Boston nowadays, which makes many here in Oxford feel lucky to be at the heart of a spreading trend).
Looking through the menu, it’s not necessarily something you’d find in the Tupelo roughly an hour’s drive from us, but it’s in the same vein of the Southern food we all know and love.
Further research uncovers the true inspiration behind the name of the restaurant: Owner Renee “Petsi” McLeod says that head chef Rembs Layman considers Elvis one of his heroes and much of his creole cuisine has been directly inspired by this admiration. One reviewer reveals that a portrait of Elvis hangs over the bar and a bust of the King is mounted in the kitchen inside Tupelo–one of the chefs is even named Elvis! Funny, I’m trying to picture Elvis swiveling those hips in 12 inches of Boston snow.
