Waltz Opens for Brunch

8 Jan

I love it when I find out another restaurant has opened its doors for Sunday brunch–especially when they plan to offer a delectable lineup of menu items.

Waltz on the Square has just begun offering Sunday brunch from 11 to 3 and staff members say they’ll continue to do so as long as they feel they’re filling a need.

Some of the offerings on the brunch menu include:

  • A veggie plate with choice of 2 or 4 of the following items: pasta; green beans; mushrooms; squash; bruschetta; deviled eggs; salad; macaroni and cheese
  • Bacon and cheddar scrambler
  • Turkey sandwich on croissant
  • Grilled salmon (when available)
  • 8 oz. filet or rib eye
  • Fried chicken with macaroni and cheese
  • Four-cheese lasagna
  • Shrimp Alfredo
  • Club salad with fried chicken
  • Waltz burger

UPDATE 1/22: The Waltz menu has changed (including brunch) and does not include the above items. See this updated post for a sneak peek of the new menu.

Tupelo Too?

8 Jan

I don’t know about you, but when I’m looking for a change of scenery, I venture out to Southaven, Memphis or Tupelo on the weekend. Recently, I’ve noticed that several Oxford restaurants have been popping up in Tupelo, making me feel like I never left Oxford. Have you recognized these familiar storefronts while in Tupelo (large chains not included)?

Old Venice Pizza Company
McAlister’s Deli
Newk’s
Varsity Grille
Oby’s (coming soon)

Do you feel that Oxford loses a bit of its charm when local restaurateurs venture into other cities, or that growth is good for both the restaurateur and the customers because it will all eventually trickle down and translate into improvements for Oxford as well?

El Sombrero Hangs Up its Hat…for a Mariachi?

6 Jan

Probably not a big surprise to those who had visited El Sombrero in the past year or so, the decline of this West Jackson Avenue Mexican eatery has finally resulted in the owners closing its doors.

Thankfully, there are still quality Mexican restaurants in town such as Taqueria El Milagro to pick up the slack.

UPDATE 3/31/10: Did anyone else notice the new sign that went up on the old El Sombrero with the name El Mariachi? Wondering if it’s the same owners with a different name or someone new altogether. I’ll let you know what I find out.

UPDATE 9/15/10: Six months after a sign for El Mariachi went up on the old location of El Sombrero, the restaurant is now open and offering 10% off during its first days of business.

Eat on the Street

4 Jan

One of the biggest trends for 2009–and expecting to grow throughout 2010–is street food. Here in Oxford, you’re probably most familiar with the late-night hot dog and corn dog carts that set up shop to feed hungry drinkers on The Square, but all over the country vendors are setting up carts with everything from tacos to grilled cheese to peanut butter and jelly throughout the day. And, fans are following Twitter–instead of their noses–to find their way to the food.

The food blogging site SeriousEats.com recently touched on the trend by providing a regional listing of popular food cart vendors from places such as California, New York and North Carolina (check the list here).

And, Oxford’s own John T. Edge has been working on a new book he’s named Truck Food Nation specifically about this topic (get a sneak peek here).

Always wanting to stay on trend, there have been rumors about someone opening a taco cart in Oxford. I would personally LOVE that, and with the amount of Mexican restaurants already in Oxford, I have to assume that others would flock to it as well. What’s your opinion? First Lady Michelle Obama on Iron Chef America

3 Jan

Today’s big food story was First Lady Michelle Obama inviting Food Network Iron Chef America chefs Emeril Lagasse and Mario Batale to compete against Bobby Flay and White House chef Cristeta Comerford using the entire contents of the White House garden. The First Lady was there to encourage all of the chefs to create dishes that enforced the use of local produce and sustainable food.

Here in Oxford, we’re fortunate to have local produce and sustainable food available to us in abundance at Farmer’s Markets and privately owned meat/seafood markets. And, a good portion of residents take advantage of this small-town perk. Many Oxford-based restaurants serve locally grown produce as well as fish that was caught locally, helping to boost our local economy and cut down on food that needs to be trucked in.

Do you have a favorite restaurant that serves locally grown food? Let us know about it at foodie@eatingoxford.com.
