On the agenda for the Courthouse Square Preservation Commission meeting to be held Monday, February 1st, is a review of the possible addition of a Checkers Drive-In Restaurant on South Lamar.
More info to come after the meeting takes place; in the meantime, you can find a menu here.
UPDATE 2/2: Plans are confirmed and an outpost of Checkers Drive-In is scheduled to be built on the corner of University and Lamar. I’m personally looking forward to having anything on that corner besides the closed down gas station and parking lot. No word on when they’ll officially break ground.
UPDATE 11/28: So the start of construction on Checkers seems to be a few months behind. They originally wanted to be open in September for football season, but they just recently demolished the gas station and started construction. Looks like it will be a few more months before construction is completed. The Oxford location of Checkers will be unique in that it will have a dining room in addition to the drive-in option.
UPDATE 7/23/11: Construction is moving swiftly now on Checkers. Looks like they’ll be open before football season starts.

What were they thinking? Probably not thinking at all.

very bad location! It would do better somewhere else in town, going to be hard to get in and out of.

The commercialization of Oxford continues…I’m beginning to wonder if the city government has ever heard of the concept of promoting local businesses. I could deal with a Checkers as long as it was on W. Jackson “Commercial” Avenue.

I agree! It cheapens the square even more. Has anyone else noticed the entrance/exits and drive through locations? It’s going to be awful for people just passing through the near vicinity.
