I don’t know about you, but when I’m looking for a change of scenery, I venture out to Southaven, Memphis or Tupelo on the weekend. Recently, I’ve noticed that several Oxford restaurants have been popping up in Tupelo, making me feel like I never left Oxford. Have you recognized these familiar storefronts while in Tupelo (large chains not included)?

McAlister’s Deli
Newk’s
Varsity Grille
Oby’s (coming soon)
Do you feel that Oxford loses a bit of its charm when local restaurateurs venture into other cities, or that growth is good for both the restaurateur and the customers because it will all eventually trickle down and translate into improvements for Oxford as well?
McAllister’s and Abner’s started in Oxford and there is no more vile food on the planet, so I suppose expansion is not always the best thing.

personally, i wouldn’t eat at most of those places no matter where i saw them! i always prefer local eateries over chains.

Varsity Grille actually started in Tupelo first, just opened laters due to football season. As far as the other restuarants, Tupelo needed some other eat places that would be open on Sundays at the time (more are open now due to the sale of alcohol). There are plenty other “non-Oxford” places to eat in Tupelo: Park Heights, the Grill, Harvey’s, Peppers, Stables, etc.
