Aphrodisiacs and New Menus at Ravine

Thursday’s art opening featuring Lisa Williamson of Memphis is the kickoff of several events coming up at Ravine.

The next food and wine pairing, scheduled for Wednesday, February 1, will carry the theme of “aphrodisiacs” as an early tribute to Valentine’s Day. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. and the cost is $30 per person. Call Ravine for reservations at 234-4555.

And speaking of Valentine’s Day, while Ravine is usually closed on Tuesdays, it will be open to accommodate those who want to enjoy a romantic evening near the fireplace. Call early to reserve a spot.

New menus (all except brunch) have also surfaced since the start of the new year. Check them out on the restaurant’s website or peruse them in person.

Jackson Avenue Burger King Closes

If you’ve driven down West Jackson Avenue lately and wondered why the parking lot and drive through have been empty at the Burger King, it’s because the restaurant closed on December 23 according to a news brief in The Oxford Eagle. There are no plans to reopen.

According to The Oxford Eagle, “The owner, Marbile Investment Corp., intends to keep its other Burger King on University Avenue open. The Burger King on West Jackson ‘was low performing, which is an easy euphemism for substantially less sales volume,’ said J.J. McNelis, president of the real estate division of Marbile Investment. Those in a management position were offered positions at other Burger Kings, but McNelis said he’s not sure what happened with the other employees. The company acquired the West Jackson property in 1998 from an existing operator and said it was originally opened in the 1980s. The University Avenue location was also acquired in 1998 from an old Hardee’s. The company owns 43 Burger Kings in the region, with 40 in the Memphis market.”

Honest Abe’s Donuts Closes

It appears that frozen custard won out over donuts last week when Honest Abe’s Donuts closed its doors and Bop’s Frozen Custard chose to remain in its current spot to continue serving patrons in search of sweets. The two businesses were sharing a building at 1412 West Jackson Avenue, which will now be solely operated by Bop’s…sans donuts.

Help Elect Liz Barrett to the Board of Aldermen

You know me best as the owner of EatingOxford.com, Oxford’s resource for local restaurant information. I’m also the editor-in-chief of a national business magazine, own my own freelance writing business and recently finished a three-year stint on the board of directors for a national foodservice editorial council.

Now I’m looking to you to help me secure a position on the City Board of Aldermen.

Brad Mayo recently resigned as the alderman for Ward 6, and I’ve decided to throw my hat in the ring as a candidate to fill his position. Through my work with EatingOxford.com I’ve been a big supporter of local businesses and have had the pleasure to meet some wonderful people here in town. As an alderman, my hope is to continue my work with Oxford, as an alderman who will work toward progress while keeping in mind the traditions that Oxonians cherish.

A special election will be held on February 14th to elect the new alderman for Ward 6. I need to collect 50 signatures by January 25th in order to have my name placed on the ballot.

If you are a registered voter who lives in Ward 6 (see map here), I’d love to meet you and have you sign my signature form.

Please stop by Mink’s on the Park (on the corner of College Hill and McElroy) on Sunday, January 22, between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to sign the petition that will get my name on the ballot (Come by even if you aren’t in Ward 6 and let’s chat!). If you won’t be able to make it out on Sunday, there will be a signature form at the Mink’s counter throughout this week leading up to Sunday.

If you’d like to make other arrangements for signing, please call or email me at 662-380-6316 or liz@eatingoxford.com.

See you at the polls!

Liz

Waste Not Want Not

credit: cookingmatters.com

I just finished watching a special on Food Network called The Big Waste. I watched because I’ve been trying to reduce the amount of food waste that occurs in my own home. I’ve been making an effort to buy only what I need so that food doesn’t get thrown out, but I have to admit that there’s still room for improvement.

After watching the show and seeing the unbelievable amount of food that has to be discarded every day by farmers, restaurants and grocery stores because we, as a nation, have become  accustomed to expecting perfection in the food we buy, it inspired me to try even harder to monitor my food waste, and also to spread the word to those here in Oxford who may also have concerns about the amount of food they’re putting in the trash bin each week.

If you want to catch the show, it will run again on January 14 at 3:00 p.m. Central Time (click here for more details).

In the meantime, below is a summary of tips for reducing food waste, provided by CookingMatters.com (click the link for more info).

1. Buy what you need and eat what you buy.

2. Buy fresh produce one week at a time.

3. Cook with canned/frozen vegetables if you don’t think you can use the fresh in time.

4. Stock your pantry.

5. Adapt recipes to use up what’s in your fridge, including leftovers.

6. Freeze leftover bread, vegetables and fruit before they go bad.

7. Combine fruit in cereal or smoothies to use it up.

8. Add vegetables to soups, casseroles, pastas, etc. before they go bad.

9. Transform leftovers into something new, such as stirring mashed potatoes into soup to create a creamy texture.

10. Use ingredients more than once over multiple meals.

Tacky Shack Expands to The Square

For those who are guilty of late-night Tacky Shack cravings, owner Clint Boutwell will be answering the call by offering a late-night Tacky Shack menu inside The Corner Bar on The Square (in the former location of Parrish’s).

Starting this Thursday night, and continuing each Thursday through Saturday evening, items such as BBQ nachos, double bacon cheeseburgers, chicken tender sandwiches and hand-cut cheese sticks will be served by Tacky Shack at The Corner Bar. Best of all, the kitchen will remain open for one hour past the bar close time!

The original Tacky Shack location on Jackson Avenue, which just debuted another new menu item tonight—Chicken & Waffles on a stick—will keep its regular daytime hours in addition to the hours at The Corner Bar.
